I will be cross posting this on other sites(nothing better to do since I'm losing the only MMO I like to play)
Mystonline: URULive has been cancelled again. February 4th, 2008. Gametap the publisher anounced that it would be removed in sixty days, Of the game they had on thier service it was the first MMO on gametap, accually it was the only MMO. It wasn't like all the other MMO's out there.
It was better, but it was better in a different way. It alowed you to explore more freely then any other MMO todate. Todate (as far as I know) most games that are made are basicly hack and slash your way to the top. You kill monsters or eachother to get more powerfull items and to get your avatar more powerfull. Most call this the treadmill effect. Its the only way those games can keep people in them.
This kind of gameplay may be fun for some, but I'm sure there are more people out there that enjoy the community more then just running around killing things. Why can't we as gamers come together and let the developers of these games know we want more the just mindless violence.
I started playing EQ1 when it was still in beta and continued for 5 years after. Then came EQ2 which I also beta tested along with atleast 3 of its expansions. I even had a crack at WOW for about 3 months, but one thing I noticed was that all of them were basicly the same. You create an avatar and from that point your whole world revolved around killing stuff just to get stronger.
There was no adventure nor story, all anyone cared about was getting that next level or that next shiney piece of armor or sword.
Myst and everything that followed it were great adventure games. Did they have violence, well somewhat. IMO there was some suggestive violence in some of them, but it was alot less then the games of today.
Now the only adventure MMO todate Mystonline: URULive (as I said that I know of) is being put to bed. I guess that most people would rather just kill stuff then accually explore or even follow a good story.
It's sad that our society is so obsessed with violent games. It's no wonder that most game developers are cashing in on it.
It was fun while it lasted though and atleast Gametap gave Mystonline a chance, but I guess it was never meant to be. Maybe some day someone will create another MMO based more on exploration and discovery then hack and slash.
